Hot Tub Chemicals 101: What You Need to Know
Hot Tub Chemistry Without the Guesswork
Balanced water protects your skin, your heater, and your warranty. You do not need a chemistry degree — you need a small kit of reliable products and a weekly testing habit. This primer covers what each chemical does, safe ranges for Canadian spas, and how Edmonton hard water changes the routine.
Sanitizer: Chlorine or Bromine
Chlorine is fast-acting and affordable. Target 3–5 ppm in most residential tubs. Use dichlor granules or a floater with slow-dissolve tablets — never toss pool tablets meant for cool water.
Bromine holds steadier in hot water and often smells less harsh. Target 4–6 ppm. Many owners pair bromine with an initial sodium bromide boost, then maintain with tablets or granules.
Ozone generators and UV systems reduce sanitizer demand but rarely eliminate it entirely. Test twice weekly during heavy winter use.
pH and Total Alkalinity
- pH: 7.2–7.8 (aim for 7.4–7.6). Low pH corrodes heaters; high pH reduces sanitizer strength and causes scale
- Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm. It buffers pH swings from rain, top-ups, and bather load
Adjust alkalinity first, then pH. In Alberta, evaporation concentrates minerals — retest after every few top-ups with the garden hose.
Calcium Hardness and Scale Control
Ideal hardness sits between 150–250 ppm. Soft water can etch surfaces; very hard water leaves white flakes on jets and heater elements. Use calcium increaser in soft regions or a scale preventer / metal sequestrant where hardness runs high. Scale on heaters is a leading cause of no-heat service calls in Edmonton.
Shock (Oxidizer)
Non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate) or chlorine shock breaks down chloramines, oils, and dead algae. Shock after parties, when water smells "chemical," or weekly during regular use. Run jets with the cover open for 20 minutes afterward to off-gas — then rebalance sanitizer before soaking.

- Test strips or liquid test kit (pH, alkalinity, sanitizer, hardness)
- Sanitizer of choice (chlorine or bromine)
- pH increaser and pH decreaser
- Alkalinity increaser
- Non-chlorine shock

- Defoamer (optional — fix the root cause if foam returns)

Safety and Storage
Never mix chemicals. Add product to water, not water to product. Store tubs sealed, cool, and dry — Alberta garages freeze in winter; liquids can separate or burst. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Rinse hands after dosing and avoid soaking immediately after heavy chemical adds.
Weekly Routine for Busy Owners
Set a recurring reminder on your phone — Sunday evenings work well for many Edmonton households. Test water, adjust sanitizer, rinse filters, and skim debris.
